SPENDING XMAS IN PRISON: Dikago

Man crashes car into lover after row over cash

Apparently driven crazy with anger, a Molepolole man is alleged to have deliberately crashed his Honda Fit into his baby mama after she refused to give him money.

Although he maintains his innocence, claiming he meant to reverse the car and not lurch forward, 41-year-old Moreri Dikago has been charged with attempted murder over the incident.

The commotion occurred at around 0700hrs on Friday morning when Dikago popped round to see his girlfriend, Maipelo Kgomela, 26, at her place in Lesetlheng.

Reportedly adamant that she owed him money, he demanded she pay him back and grew annoyed to learn she only had P100, which she planned to use to buy meat for their two-year-old child.

It is said Dikago did not take the news well, angrily telling Kgomela she should let him know if she was no longer in love with him.

It seems he then hopped into his car and drove directly into the verandah where Kgomela was seated, with the baby perched precariously on her lap.

The suspect then sped away from the crime scene in his battered vehicle.

Kgomela, meanwhile, sustained injuries to her right leg and was taken to the hospital where she was treated and discharged after the matter was reported to the police.

Dikago was arrested the same day and detained in police cells over the weekend before appearing in front of Molepolole Magistrates Court on Monday.

Requesting the accused have his turkey in the slammer, the Prosecutor, Inspector Thema Marumolo warned that if set free so soon after the drama, Dikago might finish what he started.

Trying his luck for bail, the suspect revealed he had left some belongings unattended. He also maintained the crash was a mistake and that he had not intended to plough into Kgomela.

Despite his best efforts, Matlhalerwa ward native will spend both Christmas and the New Year behind bars after court saw fit to remand him in custody until 6 January, when he returns for mention.

Dikago cut a frustrated figure as he trudged sombrely out of the court gallery, escorted by the boys in blue transporting him to Molepolole Prison. At least he was not required to drive this time!
