WORRIED: Ranku is concerned at the recent rise in murders in and around Mahalapye

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of a young man stabbed to death in the quiet village of Taupye on Friday night.

Currently in police custody, the teenager, as well as a 28-year-old man, were detained on Saturday and are due to appear before Mahalapye Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (29 July).

The slain man, aged 20, was found lying by the roadside at Moineedi ward around midnight.

In a brief interview with The Voice, Mahalapye Central Station Commander, Meshack Ranku revealed, "When we received the report, our officers swiftly attended the scene where they took the victim to Mahalapye Hospital where he was certified dead.

“He had stab wounds on his body. Our investigations then led to the arrest of the first suspect [the teenager] who then led us to the second suspect.”

Due to the first accused’s tender age, his arraignment will be held in a closed court.

Ranku expressed huge concern at the rise in killings in his jurisdiction, noting this was the third murder case recorded in the month of July alone. In total, Mahalapye Central Police have logged six murders this year.
