FEELING BLUE: Sebutlana

Although his profession requires he take a pledge promising to help people, a nurse finds himself in the police’s bad books after allegedly threatening to kill his girlfriend and her family.

Lesego Sebutana, 41, will temporarily swap his white nurses’ uniform for yellow prison robes after he was remanded in custody by Molepolole Magistrates Court this week.

Sebutana is said to have lost his cool early on Friday (15 May) morning, his tirade reportedly sparked by his suspicions that his 30-year-old lover was cheating on him.

“Ke tsile go go bolaya ke bo ke bolaya batho ba ko ga lona ke bo ke le tshubela mo ntlong, (I am going to kill you and kill your family and burn you inside the house),” are the supposed words that landed the nurse in jail.

According to Lekgwapheng Assistant Superintendent Akimo Mlazie, the complainant reported the matter at around 0300 hrs.

“We looked for the suspect, but he was nowhere to be found; we then left a message where he stays that he should report himself to the police. On Sunday he handed himself in and was taken before court the following morning after spending the night in the holding cells,” Mlazie told The Voice.

Despite his standing as a respected public servant, Sebutana received no special treatment, arriving for court in handcuffs under police escort.

Begging to be set free, although he admitted slapping the complainant, the accused insisted he was innocent of the threat to kill charge.

“I never said those words and never used anything dangerous. I only slapped her and scared her with the iron that she had plugged in. I think she said that only because she was annoyed. May I be granted bail? I was supposed to be at work; if I wanted to kill her, there was a knife, but I didn’t take it because I didn’t have intentions to kill her,” maintained Sebutana.

Arguing against bail, Prosecutor Inspector Bakanoki Tsayang revealed the police are still to record witness statements in the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) case.

The nurse was left feeling sick to the stomach as the magistrate saw fit to remand him in custody until 15 June, when he will return to court for mention.
