Locked up for close to five months after allegedly threatening to kill her disabled daughter as well as herself, a troubled mother was granted bail by Molepolole Magistrates Court last week.

Somewhat ironically, the unemployed 33-year-old, who has six children in total, fell foul of the law on 16 June – the Day of the African Child!

It is said the suspect, who has not be named to protect her little girl’s identity, arrived home in a foul mood at around 2000hrs on the evening in question.

She reportedly accused her daughter, a disabled eight-year-old, of hiding in the dark and started beating her, causing the child to scream for help.

Relatives arrived, seemingly in time to hear the mum utter the following words, “I want to kill this girl then kill myself.”

Fearing for the child’s life, the family reported the matter to the police who later arrested her.

Charged with threat to kill, following several failed attempts to win her freedom, begging to be reunited with her kids, the Kweneng native was given temporary relief.

“The accused is granted bail on condition that she binds herself with the amount of P500, should not commit any similar offence whilst on bail and attend the court all the time,” ruled Magistrate Mmamerafe Phologo, setting her next mention for 9th March.

Although she is now back home, her six children remain in care at a special centre.
