GOLDEN MOMENT: Siwelele were crowned champs

Every Sunday, football grounds up and down the country are jam-packed with fun-lovers and beer-guzzlers as social clubs do battle in a feel-good frenzy.

Although fun is the name of the game, as well as having a good time, Sunday Soccer, as the phenomenon is generally known, often comes with a good cause.

This was the case in Francistown over the long weekend, as Legends Social Club hosted their second annual May Day Charity Tournament at The Waterhole on Sunday.

The objective of the day was to generate funds and collect winter clothing for the less fortunate, particularly children.

The one-day extravaganza featured eight social teams from around the country, with the likes of Siwelele travelling all the way from Gaborone, accompanied by their hearty band of supporters.

Joining Ghetto favorite’s Stress were: Mmadinare, Double Impact, who made the journey from Selibe Phikwe, Boiteko, Happy Boys and Dijammogo.

In the end it was Siwelele SC who were crowned champions, trouncing the hosts, Legends 7-1 in a one-sided finale watched by a bumper crowd most Premier League teams would be happy to attract.

Speaking to Voice Sport, Legends’ Manager of Communications and Marketing, Gababotse Phofuetsile explained they felt compelled to give back to the community, especially with the winds of winter fast approaching.

“As a club, we have realized that when winter arrives, most people, especially children, do not have appropriate clothing, and it is difficult for their parents to buy for them due to lack of income. We will contact Francistown City Council to help us choose the deserving people to whom we will donate the winter clothing, which will include sweaters, jackets, blankets, and beanies,” revealed Phofuetsile.

When presenting the trophy to the winners, Francistown Mayor, Godisang Radisigo encouraged other social clubs to follow Legends legendary example and plan worthwhile events that will aid in the growth of the city as a whole.
