SVM SPOKESPERSON: Matenge

Sports Volunteer Movement (SVM) will unveil a completely new look this Friday in Gaborone.

According to the Movement’s Public Relations Officer Thato Matenge, they will unveil a new logo, a website, a volunteer database system to celebrate their 20th anniversary of existence.

Speaking to Voice Sport this week, Matenge said the movement was formed back in 2000 with a mandate of creating a body responsible for coordinating sport volunteers.

“SVM was formed as a sub-structure under the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) to monitor sports volunteers and activities in Botswana through the provision of voluntary sports services,” he said.

The SVM mouthpiece further said they have managed to attract over 10 000 volunteers across the country and are still hopeful of getting more people to volunteer during sporting activities.

Matenge said over the years they have encountered few challenges such as retention of volunteers which dealt them a blow and harmed their chances of attracting possible sponsors.

“We have contributed at numerous local events such as Toyota 1000km Desert Race, Africa Region 5, and many other local sports events,” she said.

Matenge told Voice Sport that the Friday event will be a massive one.

“We’ll be celebrating the achievements of the sports volunteers, which has immensely contributed to the enhancement of professionalism in sports administration in the country. It is not a secret that most local sports administrators are volunteers,” he said.
