IMPRESSED: Ambassador Sadek

The six-week Cyber Smart Challenge came to an end in style at the weekend, with a glamorous award ceremony at Cresta lodge.

Gracing the ceremony, European Union Ambassador, Jan Sadek described the campaign, organised to raise awareness on cyber security, as a huge success.

A visibly pleased Sadek revealed the initiative had sparked a noticeable increase in conversation around cyber security in Botswana.

“Cyber security starts with us practicing cyber hygiene by keeping track of how we use the Internet. The Union has been happy to support this challenge and it’s a pleasure to see how young Batswana participates in these creative two-minute clips,” reflected the Ambassador.

As part of the campaign, youth in the age bracket of 14 to 21 were invited to express themselves online in 120-seconds or less on the importance of cyber security and how people can best protect themselves from Internet hackers.

The campaign also included a media and social media drive as well as an outreach programme to schools.

Highlighting the importance of staying safe online, Director of Policy Development at Ministry of Transport and Communication, Cecil Masiga, noted, “Much is spoken of the risks from hackers of the Internet.

“If we do not learn what precautions to take, then we are more vulnerable – just as we are more vulnerable if we cross the road without looking right and left!”

Masiga advised the nation to remain vigilant when delving into cyber space, adding that although the dangers are real, most are easily avoidable.

Reflecting on the campaign, the Programme Coordinator, David Moepeng said he was impressed with the results.

“We did not only get over 100 entries but the quality was really encouraging. Young Batswana are demonstrating an understanding of the cyber security measures!” stated Moepeng.

Adding a celebrity touch to the occasion was the campaign’s ambassador, Zeus. The popular rapper’s main role was to bridge the gap between cyber related issues and the younger generation.

First Prize on the night went to Selwana Motlatsi Motsemeng, with Amogelang Tshukudu in second. Winnie Motsemeng, and Angela Kgosiyang were awarded joint third.
