Dad leaves prison after paying child maintenance debt

Having spent a week behind bars for failing to pay child maintenance, an unemployed Molepolole man is free to go home after settling the P8, 500 debt.

Remanded in custody last Monday, Samuel Koko, 56, was released earlier today (2 March) after it was revealed he has paid up in full.

Koko, known as ‘Gearbox’ on the streets, previously admitted skipping maintenance for eight straight months, defying a November 2023 court order in which he was instructed to pay P1, 000 to maintain his 11-year-old child every month.

During his brief appearance before Molepolole Magistrates Court, Koko voiced his intention to apply for ‘variation’ and get the monthly amount reduced.

In response Principal Magistrate, Solomon Setshedi advised him to do so, warning that he will keep going to prison if he fails to pay his dues.
