12 local students eye regional Huawei ICT competition
Twelve students from the University of Botswana, the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), and Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) have advanced to the regional stage of the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 following the national finals.
The event, hosted by Huawei Botswana in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Innovation, recognised students who will represent Botswana in the next phase of the global ICT talent development programme.
The Huawei ICT Competition is one of the world’s largest platforms for ICT talent development, bringing together students from universities in more than 100 countries. Participants compete in areas such as networking, cloud computing and computing technologies while gaining exposure to globally recognised training and certification pathways.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Innovation, Cecil Masiga, highlighted the importance of developing strong digital capabilities among Botswana’s youth as the country continues to advance its digital transformation agenda.
“Developing local digital talent is essential as Botswana continues to build a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy. Initiatives such as the Huawei ICT Competition provide valuable opportunities for students to gain practical exposure to emerging technologies and to strengthen the skills required for the digital future,” he said.
Huawei Botswana Managing Director Li Dalu said the competition plays an important role in strengthening the connection between academic learning and the skills required in the global technology industry.
“Through our partnerships with institutions such as the University of Botswana, BIUST and BAC, the Huawei ICT Academy programme continues to provide students with access to advanced training and globally recognised certifications,” he said.
The students recognised during the event will now proceed to the regional stage of the competition, where they will compete for an opportunity to advance to the global finals.
Huawei Botswana continues to work closely with government and academic institutions to support ICT skills development and strengthen Botswana’s digital talent ecosystem.
