An on-duty Molepolole police officer was attacked by a motorist on Thursday afternoon, leaving him with gaping wounds and a bloody face. Constable Molatlhegi Monjwa dodged countless stones hurled by the out-of-control motorist during a deadly encounter that played out in full view of shocked onlookers.
In a video circulating on social media, the 32-year-old suspect is seen throwing stones at the officer, who eventually fled into a police vehicle and drove away.
Constable Monjwa was on duty with a female officer, Sergeant Segomotso Gontlafetse, who escaped unhurt.
Confirming the incident to The Voice Online, Molepolole Police Station Commander, Superintendent Jacob Molapong, said they’re still investigating the matter.
“It was reported the suspect was recklessly tailgating an ambulance. The police stopped him, suspecting he was under the influence. When they asked for his driver’s license, he complied, but they discovered that his vehicle license had expired and requested that he accompany them to the station,” explained Superintendent Molapong.
He, however, said the situation quickly escalated when the suspect lost his temper and began pelting the officer with stones.
Fearing for his life, the constable retreated into the police car, but the irate motorist continued hurling stones and then reached into his car boot to retrieve what the officers suspected was a knife. The officers quickly left the scene and drove to the hospital, where he was treated for head and nose injuries and later discharged.
Superintendent Molapong confirmed that the suspect was arrested at his residence on Friday.
He is expected to face charges of assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving, and driving an unlicensed vehicle.
