ARRESTED: Moagi is accused of beating up his elderly mum

A Matshelagabedi man is said to have put his 87-year-old mother in hospital, allegedly breaking both her arms with a knobkerrie after the old lady attempted to intervene when he was disciplining his son.

Moagi Mongale, 47, has been charged with grievous harm over the family fallout, which occurred early evening at their home in Boiteko ward on 4th September.

His mother, Esther Mongale has since undergone surgery and was discharged from Nyangabgwe Hospital, awaiting the results of a brain scan.

In an interview with The Voice, Matsiloje Station Commander, Oteng Ngada revealed the problem started when Moagi fell-out with his 13-year-old son.

“He was chasing the boy from their home for a misunderstanding they had. The granny, who is the accused person’s mother, intervened, asking Moagi to let the child stay with her in her room at least; that is when he attacked his mother,” stated the Superintendent, adding it happened around 2030 hours, when the pensioner was preparing to surrender to bed.

Fortunately, her frightened cries for help alerted other relatives in the yard, who quickly rushed to the frail elder’s aid.

The cops were called and Moagi was subsequently arrested, appearing before Francistown Magistrates Court two days later.

Plea in the matter was reserved, with the police informing court they were yet to take a victim statement from Esther.

Attempting to win his immediate freedom, the accused mother-beater asked court to grant him bail, noting he had ‘left his things’ unattended and needed to sort them out.

Moagi’s reasoning failed to convince the Magistrate, who remanded him in custody until his next court appearance on 3 October.
