Botswana’s film industry is set to receive a significant boost with the participation of Botswana’s celebrated filmmaker, Thabiso Maretlwaneng as a guest speaker at FAME Week Africa 2024.
This event, which celebrates Africa’s vibrant cultural and creative industries, will be held in Cape Town on September, 2, and features a star-studded lineup, including global icons like Steve Harvey.
For Maretlwaneng, being invited to speak at FAME Week Africa represents a significant personal and professional achievement.
“Being part of such a high profile platform is a dream come true. It’s an opportunity to showcase Botswana’s creative talent and connect with industry leaders from around the world,” he said.
Maretlwaneng also spoke of how he is currently preparing for the event with a focus on his topic, “Mastering the Lens: Cinematic Storytelling” where he is expected to share insights from the making of the hit Botswana TV drama, SgEla.
“The theme this year, ‘Your Africa, Your Story,’ aligns with my research on promoting Botswana’s history through biopics, I’m excited to discuss the balance between artistic vision and technical execution in SgEla,” he said.
He further noted that taking part in this event will offer him unparalleled networking opportunities and exposure to key industry figures.
“This event is crucial for advancing my career and securing support for Botswana’s film industry. With SgEla already gaining attention, I hope to discuss future projects, including a new season and a feature film,” he noted.
Commenting on how thrilling the anticipation of sharing the stage with Steve Harvey is, Maretlwaneng said, “Harvey’s presence will spotlight Botswana’s creative industry and elevate my presentation of SgEla.
It’s a chance to gain valuable insights and networking opportunities that could greatly impact my career,” said Maretlwaneng.
His involvement is also set to inspire other filmmakers from Botswana and across Africa.
“FAME Week Africa attracts a diverse audience and offers opportunities in co-productions and distribution. I hope to inspire local creatives to engage with international platforms and showcase their work. I also encourage more local institutions to participate and share Botswana’s creative experiences,” he argued.
His selection was facilitated by a nomination from an industry agent and accreditation from his alma mater, AFDA in Cape Town.
“Being recognised by my university and nominated by an industry agent is a great honour, It highlights the growing impact of Botswana’s film industry,” he said.
