Police officers in the Chobe District are on high alert following a series of muggings and break-ins by what is believed to be a syndicate of hardened Zimbabwean criminals. According to Kasane Police Station Commander Superintendent James Maabong, investigations carried out have pointed towards the neighbours from Zimbabwe as the transgressors.

Maabong was quick to dismiss a rumour which slowly gathering pace that the robberies were being carried out by a Namibian syndicate, following a tense 10 day inquest into the deaths of three Nambians at the hands of the Botswana Defence Force.

“I want to be very clear on this one. We’ve never had any problems with Namibians,”

“We don’t have cases of Namibians mugging or terrorising Batswana. All the Namibians want is fish in the Chobe river. The robberies were carried by well known Zimbabweans, and we’re looking for them,” charged Maabong.

The Kasane police boss further told The Voice that most of the suspects have served time in Botswana prisons, and have been in and out of jail in the last 10 years.

“Some have served three to four years in jail, and whenever they’re released they come back to rob and commit all sorts of crimes,” he said.

“We’ll find them and they’ll face the full wrath of the law,” Maabong said.
In one incident a man of European descent was robbed in Kasane, and the culprits made away with some valuable including a pellet guy.

The syndicate then proceeded to Kazungula where they also robbed unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables.

Unfortunately their luck ran out as two were arrested and will appear before court soon.
“They target homes and individuals, then cross the border into Zimbabwe,” he said.

Maabong said they’ve followed footprints to as far as Lesoma before finally crossing into Zimbabwean territory.

“In one incident locals were taken to Zimbabwe where they identified their items following a collaboration between Botswana and Zimbabwean police,” The Voice learnt.

Maabong further warned that the syndicate may be on the prowl in the coming weeks, taking advantage of the FNB Kazungula Bridge Marathon and other events lined up in Chobe.
“The police are on high alert. We’ll get these criminals,” said Maabong.
