This Monday, Francistown police swooped on two men suspected to be in possession of uncut diamonds.
Between them, the duo, aged 27 and 34, were caught with 60 shining stones thought to be diamonds.
In separate raids, the men were nabbed trying to sell their stones at different malls in the second city.
In a brief interview with The Voice, Superintendent Ookeditse Moseki confirmed the pair had been arrested and then released pending further investigations.
“The stones have been taken to the geological survey for examination to confirm whether those particles are diamonds or not. Should they indeed turn out to be diamonds, the accused people will be charged with one count of unlawful possession of rough or uncut diamonds,” explained Moseki, who is the Officer in Charge DMPU Northern Division.
The top cop revealed the first suspect is originally from Kasane but currently resides in Ghetto’s Block 2 location.
“We got a tip-off from an anonymous person. The first arrest was made in front of The Number 1 electrical shop by the South End shopping complex. The suspect was found with the small packaged particles in his pants pocket.
“Our second suspect, who resides at Tonota village but was staying in Block 8, had 10 small particles in his pocket. He was arrested at Sunshine Plaza Mall where he was asking people to buy them,” stated Moseki.
