IN MEMORY OF BEATA KASALE-KABANGO: Walkers taking part in the walk

Y-Care and The Voice raise funds for Autism society

Scores of fitness enthusiasts braved last Saturday’s misty morning to embark on a 20 kilometre walk at Marokolwane Farms in honour of The Voice Newspaper co-founder, the late Beata Kasale-Kabango, who passed on a few years ago. This year’s walk was the fifth edition in partnership with Y-Care Charitable Trust, themed “The Legacy Lives On” and was to raise funds for people with autism.

With some showers threatening to spoil the day, the walkers did not get discouraged and walked the bush for close to three hours. The Voice Managing Director, Marc Kasale, said the pre-walk was to continue the legacy of Beata Kasale-Kabango, who co-founded the newspaper with her then business partner, Donald Laurence Moore, in the early 1990s.

“The paper has focused on reporting and assisting poor people and people with disabilities for a very long time and continues to do so to this day. After working with Y-Care Charitable Trust during her time, we felt we should continue her legacy of changing people’s lives. Our vision is to make the walk one of the biggest in the country,” said Marc Kasale.

A representative from Y-Care Charitable Trust, Nelson Letshwene, said the walk was in preparation for the major walks, being the Makgadikgadi day walk and Makgadikgadi night walk. Every month, Y-care embarks on preparatory walks for the major adventure in the Makgadikgadi salt pans.

Chairperson of Autism Botswana, Kutlwano Seeletso, said autism affects people differently and that April 2nd is Autism Day and celebrations will be held on the 4th at FNB Park. April is Autism Awareness month.

Bakgatla Deputy Chief, Kgosi Mpho Pone, advised people to walk regularly since it is good for health and helps those who work under stressful environments such as handling other people’s social problems to relax.

The sponsors of the walk were Sefalana, COSBOTS, Y-Care, Choppies, Squaremart, Publico Advertising Agency, and Dapour Water.
