KEKGONEGILE ASCENDS TO THE SG POSITION
Member of Parliament for Maun East, Goretetse Kekgonegile is the new Secretary General of Botswana Congress Party.
Kekgonegile takes over after defeating, Moncho Moncho and Morwadi Morwadi at the recently held elective congress.
The BCP SG position has been a hot seat with two members, Kentse Rammidi and Phillip Monowe having resigned from it before.
Their resignation forced the party’s Vice President, Kesitigile Gobutswang to act as party SG until the weekend elective conference was held.
Congratulations on your win, share how it came about?
Thank you. Contemporary politics is all about team work.
My commitment to the struggle, love for BCP, believe in my ability by the membership won the day for me.
And of course, excellent teamwork of the lobby.
You came against seasoned politicians, what made voters to have faith in you?
I applaud Morwadi Morwadi and Moncho Moncho for enriching the BCP democracy.
They are indeed politicians of note. I have been active in politics for almost 25 years and being a grassroots person my networking is excellent.
But more importantly I believe membership was looking for characters to weather the current political storm and I fitted the label.
The lobby list which was alleged to have had the President’s blessings lost, did you try to reconcile after elections?
I’m not sure which lobby list the President supported but he has a BCP constitutional right to also elect during refreshing of leadership mandate.
So there is no bad blood hence no need for reconciliation.
Emphasis is difference of opinion should not be treated as bad blood or hatred.
I believe lobbies will disband and party members should start viewing themselves along national party agenda and it’s our responsibility as leadership to ensure that happens within the first 100 days roadmap.
Share with us your road map as SG.
BCP has grounded protocols and values within which all my predecessors operated.
Values of Botho, discipline, transparency and integrity are paramount in our every day functioning hence my legacy should centre around leadership regeneration, entrenching BCP culture and ideology on functioning party structures, and regime change oriented membership drive targets.
BCP visibility and membership driven party activities are high on our agenda. Party ko Sechabeng!
This is seen by some as a stepping stone, how long do you want to stay as SG?
Honestly I don’t have Presidential ambitions but if the call comes we would have to cross that bridge if we ever get there depending on a number of variables prevailing then.
But we have enough talent within the party. It is difficult to ascertain availability duration given the speed in politics dynamics but I intend to serve my term to the best of my ability and take it from there.
Any message to your party members?
I urge BCP membership to regroup in preparation for the bye elections, Constitutional review and delimitation exercise in which we must participate vigorously.
Corona is real, let’s all keep safe by washing hands, social distancing and wearing masks.
