Department of Wildlife and National Parks is investigating unsual elephant mortalities in villages along the Okavango delta.
Regional Wildlife Officer in Maun, Dimakatso Ntshebe has confirmed that since Friday until Sunday, they had discovered at least thirty dead elephants in areas of Seronga, Gunotsoga and Eretsha.
“By Friday we discovered 16 carcasses and today alone, we found 14, ” Ntshebe explained.
He said they have no idea what could be the cause of the mortality and are awaiting laboratory results to confirm.
Ntshebe further explained that poaching has been ruled out because all carcasses were found intact.
He added that their team was out doing patrols in the area.
