COMING SOON: Local rugby to return

Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) Secretary-General (SG) Boitshoko Tsiane has revealed to Voice Sport that that local rugby clubs will resume training next week while they await dates for the resumption of the league.

Responding to questions asked by Voice Sport this week, Tsiane said even as training begins, there are still some loose ends that need tying up.

“Clubs are expected to return to the playing fields on the 21st of September 2020 but with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols,” said Tsiane.

The last time local rugby clubs tasted action was way back in March, and the clubs should be eager to return after a five months hiatus.

“There is no way rugby can be played without contact, however, we have been given strict instructions by the Health Authorities to prepare for non-contact for now as we are looking to assess the situation before they finally give us the go-ahead,” Tsiane said.

For a committee that assumed office in February 2020, Covid-19 has been a stumbling block in their efforts to implement some of the initiatives meant to grow the sport.

“We have been able to review our strategy document this year. We are just waiting for the draft document from the consultant who facilitated the strategy review workshop. Furthermore; we used this opportunity away from the fields to do a bit of housekeeping. We managed to constitute most of our board committees, the Finance Committees, the Technical Committee, and the Women Committee,” revealed Tsiane.
