Jwaneng Galaxy crowned BPL Champions
Jwaneng Galaxy jubilantly lifted the 2022/2023 Botswana Premier League Championship trophy on Wednesday and walked away P750 000 richer after defeating Holy Ghost 2-0 at the Galaxy Stadium.
The Galaxy Stars finished the season with 69 points after winning 21, drawing 6 and losing 2 games. Last season’s champions, Gaborone United, finished second with 64 points and pocketed the P375 000 runners up prize money.
Prisons XI’s survival hopes on the other hand evaded them and have been officially relegated after losing 4-0 against Security Systems and will be joining relegated Extension Gunners and Mogoditshane Fighters in the lower league next season.
An elated Galaxy coach, Morena Ramoreboli, attributed the league success to the spirit of team work, positive attitude and dedication by the players, management and the fans.
“It has been a tough journey and finally we managed. I am excited that we managed to win. In our first game we led 2-1 and Holy Ghost managed to come from behind to equalize, making it 2-2 so I talked to my boys about concentration when we got into this game and they responded accordingly,” said Ramoreboli.
For his part, Holy Ghost Coach Phillimon Makhwengwe said his boys gave the game away and he was disappointed by their performance. Coach ‘Daphil’ said their opponents were not given much competition and were comfortable on the ball. He however commended Galaxy and wished them well in the CAF Cup competition as the league champions.
