False hope

At this time four years ago, Zimbabwe was topping the news globally.

The man who had ruled the country for almost 40 years had just tendered his resignation after being pushed into a corner by the military.

Zimbabweans went into wild celebrations at the fall of the late former President, Robert Mugabe with the belief and hope that it was a new dawn for the country.

Mugabe had presided over years of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and at one time the country had the world’s highest inflation of 1, 000 percent.

Many fled and sought greener pastures beyond borders. There seemed to be no hope for home and all the blame was on Mugabe.

So when he was finally shown the exit door four years ago, having refused in the past to leave after losing elections, the euphoria that engulfed the nation was understandable.

People had suffered enough under his leadership. Zimbabwe had known no other leader but him and there was a quest for change.

The change came but it has since turned out that people celebrated in vain.

Fast forward to today, no meaningful change that benefits the masses has actually occurred in the country.

The struggles that were there under Mugabe are still there and one can even argue the situation has actually gotten worse!

So disillusioned are the people that some even say it out loud, they miss Mugabe, he was the devil we knew.

In other unrelated news, Mary Mubaiwa, the estranged wife of Vice President, General Constatino Chiwenga is literally seeing dust and I must say I now feel for her, she is going through a lot.

On Tuesday, the court ordered she be held in custody pending another medical examination to determine if she is fit to stand trial.

She suffers from severe lymphoedema which causes swelling of hands and feet.

A day earlier she had tweeted, crying out to whoever cares to listen that she misses and yearns to be with her minor children as she has not seen them for two years.

The VP cut her off from their children following their acrimonious divorce in 2019.

Since then, Mubaiwa, who is facing charges of fraud, money laundering and attempting to kill the Vice President, has been in and out of court while trying to reach out to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene with no success.

Mubaiwa, who is an ex model, also draws little sympathy from social media as many say she deserves all the bad things coming her way as she was untouchable during her days as the ‘second lady’ of Zimbabwe.

Whatever the case, I personally feel she deserves access to her children; she might be a bad person but I am sure she is a good mother and the VP is hitting her where it hurts most.
