Opposition parties to hold joint rally

Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), Alliance for Progressives and Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) will hold a joint star rally tomorrow (Saturday) at Diphetogo grounds in G-West, Gaborone

The massive rally will be the first of its kind since the 2019 general elections, which were marred by allegations of rigging.

It is also one of the first big political events since the country came out of State of Public Emergency last month.

In an interview with this publication, UDC’s Head of Communications, Moeti Mohwasa said the rally is an initiative agreed upon at the Opposition Cooperation Forum, which is chaired by former Speaker of National Assembly, Dr Margaret Nasha.

“It is aimed at bringing to the fore the failures of the current regime and why it should vacate power. Secondly, as opposition parties we have agreed to work together. It should be appreciated that we are still in talks and working towards the opposition cooperation framework.”

Mohwasa said that while working on the Opposition Cooperation Forum, they have agreed as opposition parties to work together on other pressing matters such as, bye-elections and National Constitution Review.

However, Mohwasa explained that the current working model does not mean they were a single party.

“No, we are not one. We will as the AP, BPF and UDC continue to organise other party events independently,” he noted.
