SHACKLED SUSPECT: Gareobonye leaving court

A Tonota man is accused of breaking into his baby mama’s house with a spade before dragging the terrified woman into the bush and threatening to kill both her and her cousin as well as himself.

The incident, which played out in Manyanda ward last Tuesday, left a smashed door, three broken windows, P1,000 worth of damage and one severely shaken lady.

The suspect, 37-year-old Banthati Gareobonye, was arrested the same day and appeared before Francistown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with threat to kill and malicious damage to property.

Having hauled her away from her home, Gareobonye allegedly warned Kgotso Mojewa, “I am going to commit an offence that I will be prosecuted for. I am going to kill you, kill Lesedi [cousin] and then commit suicide after.”

However, Mojewa – Gareobonye’s girlfriend and the mother of his child – managed to escape and fled to a neighbour’s house where they called the police.

In a brief interview with The Voice, Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada, explained, “Apparently the suspect went to the mother of his child’s house where he demanded to see his girlfriend, who is said to have refused to come out of the house.

“That is when the suspect allegedly broke down the windows and doors to gain entrance.”

With investigations into the matter still fresh, Gareobonye was remanded in custody until his next court appearance, set for 25th June when he will appear for status update.
