Commandos suspected to be involved in poaching activities

About 27 members of Botswana Defence Force (BDF) are currently detained at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) after they were found in possession of government trophy on Monday night.

According to a source within the BDF, the group was arrested at their different barracks after their arrival from one of their operations in the Okavango Delta and Chobe area.

Information gathered by this publication has indicated that 24 members of the group are Commandos based at Glen Valley Barracks while three who are in charge of the BDF signal were arrested at Thebephatshwa.

The source added that the group which has amongst them a senior officer of a rank of a Major were found in possession of Ostrich Shells, Pangolin skins and game biltong amongst the goods that were stashed in their bags.

The source mentioned that the group could be part of a syndicate that has been involved in poaching activities in the North West District.

“There are also allegations that some senior members of the BDF and a former BDF Commander could have a hand in poaching,” said the source that applauded the Military Police for a job well done.

“Our fear is that if we don’t expose these things, the case is likely to be swept under the carpet but if handled well then it should warrant dismissal with immediate effect.”

However, when contacted for comment, BDF Spokesperson, Colonel Tebo Dikole confirmed the matter but didn’t want to be drawn into discussing it.

“Kindly note that since this is an ongoing investigation, it would be erroneous for the BDF to comment on the matter. The BDF assures the public of its commitment to its mission of defending Botswana’s Territorial Integrity, Sovereignty and National Interests,” he said in his short response.
