Virtual show in the new normal

The 2020 Yarona FM awards (YAMAs) went ahead at New Capital Cinemas this Saturday in a slightly subdued pre-recorded format.

With Covid-19 laying waste to the entertainment industry, the YAMAs became the first major music-centred event to adapt to the new normal.

Held under the theme ‘Fabulous 21’ in line with the radio station turning 21, the award’s sixth edition lacked the glitz, glamour and excitement that has defined previous offerings.

Swapping blockbuster for intimacy, the virtual show was broadcast on Yarona’s Facebook page as well as Now! TV and included an audience of less than 50 invited guests.

The groups were separated into two cinemas to preview the awards.

Famous for its fashion, both weird and wonderful, this year’s red carpet understandably proved an anti-climax due to the paltry attendance. Indeed, only one solitary photographer bothered to turn up!

On the night, the list of winners was announced (see below). It was noticeable that no single artist dominated.

With after-parties, flashing cameras and fabulous fashion the very essence of an awards show, it was no surprise this year’s event was short of sparkle.

In retrospect, organisers could have livened the night up by having more of a live element to proceedings. Apart from the audience, everything was pre-recorded. Maybe the acceptance speeches could have been live? Certainly, it is something to consider in the future.

However, the show went ahead at all is worth celebrating. The Yarona FM Awards team went to great lengths to ensure the event took place.

With cash prizes ranging from P10, 000 to P45, 000, the awards provided the hungry sector with a much-needed financial boost.

It remains to be seen whether other award ceremonies will follow suit but a least the YAMAs have got things rolling.
