Shakawe Magistrates Court played host to an unusual spectacle on Tuesday morning as a mother and her son appeared before court charged with murder.
The pair are accused of killing the mother’s boyfriend, whose dead body was found by neighbours at the woman’s house in Samutsima village in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Speaking to The Voice, Shakawe Station Commander, Keitshokile Kebodiretswe revealed his officers received a call from an anonymous male, reporting that a man had collapsed and died at Samutsima’s Mabudutsa ward.
“We attended the report and found the 32-year-old man lying in a pool of blood with some injuries on the head. Our investigations showed us that the previous day [Saturday25 July] there was a fight between the deceased and his girlfriend.
“During the fight, the girlfriend’s son intervened, kicked the deceased, who then fell on a log which pierced him on the left side of the head causing a deep cut,” disclosed the police boss, adding that the woman, 37, fled the scene while her son, 22, slept in a different hut in the same yard.
Kebodiretswe said that on the night of the altercation it appears the man came home at around 2200hrs and had been drinking traditional brew.
“We are worried about people who break the Covid-19 rules of drinking. Traditional brews should not be sold late at night. People should also avoid drinking too much as they can end up getting in fights that sometimes lead to death!” warned the police boss.
Meanwhile, both mother and son were remanded in custody and are due to re-appear for mention on 10 August.
