A Molepolole Magistrate’s court this week remanded in custody a 34-year-old man who allegedly assaulted and cut off his girlfriend’s ears in an act of extreme domestic violence at Boditsana lands.
Appearing before Magistrate Kefilwe Resheng this week, Poloko Gabaikanngwe of Lekgwapheng ward was charged with a single count of grievous bodily harm for the brutal offence.
The victim, Tsholofelo Tiribe, was found by her cousin abandoned in the bush two days after the offence as she tried to drag herself home.
The prosecutor, Sub Inspector Maureen Segokgo, told the court that Tiribe is currently admitted at Scottish Livingstone Hospital in a bad state and that she is unable to speak.
“We have not yet recorded statements from both the victim and her witness as she only has one witness. May the accused be remanded in custody while we are still monitoring the status of the victim and also to allow for the investigating officer to have time to record statements,” Segokgo said and added that they hope the victim will provide names of other witnesses upon recovery.
When the charge was read out to him, Gabaikanngwe who did not show any remorse, did not object to its contents except for his Omang number that he said was incorrect.
When asked to give the correct one, he said he did not know his Omang number as he had also left the card at the lands.
Gabaikanngwe pleaded with the court to grant him bail with promises that he will abide by the set conditions and make sure he attends court at all times.
“I cannot grant you bail, the victim is at the hospital and you will also be in prison. You are remanded till the next mention on January 27th, 2020,” concluded Magistrate Resheng.
