Kwaito hitmaker, Naisiboy, returns with fresh music

Sharon Mathala
BACK ON TRACK: Naisiboy

In 2008 an unknown Form 4 student from Gaborone Senior Secondary School (GSS) captivated the country with his hit single music, ‘Manekeneke’.

Three albums and 13 years later, following a short break from the music industry, 29-year-old Naisiboy is back in the studio.

To mark his return, the Kwaito hit-maker is desperate to get in a few hits of a different kind, challenging his long time mentor, Vee Mampeezy to a boxing match to settle their ‘differences’.

Why do you want to get into the ring with Vee?

To settle our differences.

There is a lot you don’t know that has been going on behind the scenes and I feel the best way is for me to get into the boxing ring with him to teach him a lesson.

Enlighten me, what don’t I know?

Look, there are certain sacrifices that I have made for Vee.

You see he is someone who introduced me to the music industry and taught me a lot.

But now because there are answers I need from him he doesn’t take my calls or respond to my messages.

Are you mad because you were not chosen for the P25 K performances?

It is not even about that!

It is about the fact that we were part of the struggle and when people now started receiving monies they forget everyone.

It is not fair how other artists were treated and not given a piece of something we all advocated for.

Why did you take a break from music?

I needed to find myself.

You see what people don’t know is that I was a drug addict.

My music career wasn’t going as well as I had hoped even though my debut album blew.

I found solace in alcohol and eventually drugs.

That was a very dark and painful time of my life.

What drug was it?

Cat. It started with marijuana and eventually, I was a full-blown cat addict.

It got so bad that I had to be admitted to rehab a couple of times.

You see my father is a pastor and so that was a very bad look, not only for me as an artist but for my family too.

But now you are recovered and back with new music?

Oh yes.

I will be releasing my new album soon.

I have had a couple of delays because of the pandemic but I will definitely be dropping the album which I have named ‘Ke gopotse gae’.

I will be retracing my steps with this album and even the message is really about what I have been through.

Five things people don’t know about you?

1. I am a proud father of three kids
2. I am a praise and worship choir member at my church
3. I am the firstborn at our home. I take care of my family
4. I come from Lerala
5. I am fluent in about five languages
