A young man facing a single count of unlawful wounding has been kept under lock and key in prison to await trial.
Accused of stabbing his girlfriend, the 25- year- old young man, Tefo Jonas of Takatokwane village was remanded in custody before Molepolole Magistrates Court on Monday.
Although he pleaded with the court to grant him bail so he could go and care for his child, Molepolole Chief Magistrate, Goabaone Rammapudi-Lesedi denied Jonas bail on grounds that the crime he allegedly committed was very violent.
Delivering a ruling, Magistrate Rammapudi-Lesedi said, “You committed a violent offence and facing another violent matter, the stabs are multiple, it will be against the law to release the accused on bail.”
Opposing Jonas’s bail application, State prosecutor, Sub Inspector Potso Kealeboga had cited the freshness of the matter and argued that police investigations were still on going.
Sub Inspector Kealeboga had also told the court that Jonas could not be granted bail because the victim was still hospitalised under critical conditions, and her statement had not yet been recorded.
He also brought to the court’s attention that the accused had a rape case pending before Magistrate Kefilwe Resheng, still in Molepolole with an August 6th, 2020 trial date.
Jonas, who was alleged to have committed the rape sometime last year, wounded his girlfriend while he was on bail.
“The accused has a propensity of committing offences while on bail, it’s clear that the society is not safe may he be remanded in custody,” Kealeboga said Kealeboga.
Meanwhile his charge sheet has stated that on August 2nd, 2020 at Tsiane ward, Takatokwane, Jonas unlawfully wounded Ame Judge by stubbing her with a knife on the back right shoulder and left arm causing serious injuries on her body.
He allegedly stabbed Judge for suspicious that she was cheating on him with another man.
The accused will appear for case management conference on August 27th, 2020.
