Celebration of the return of alcohol after a two months government ban ended in the tragic death of a soldier at the Maun BDF army barracks last week.
Although Maun police station commander, Chenamo Orateng has declined to comment on the incident on Wednesday afternoon because details of the unfortunate incident were still sketchy, a soldier who asked to remain anonymous has told The Voice in an interview that a soldier started a fire that killed his colleague following a beer brawl.
Allegedly on Tuesday, when the government re-opened sales of liquor, the soldiers went overboard buying gallons of alcohol to enjoy with their colleagues.
“The guys brought in buckets full and after drinking a squabble ensued between two soldiers. It was just a men’s thing and then the other one retreated and went to sleep, but not at his house,” the source added before explaining that, “the younger soldier who was still fuming thought his rival had gone back to his house to sleep so he went there and torched the house, killing the wrong guy in the process.”
The victim was another soldier who was sleeping in one of the houses that caught fire in a 25 male block.
