Tonota Police are investigating a case in which a 63-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Seroto ward on Sunday afternoon.
The lady lived alone and had only moved to the area recently.
Due to the badly decomposed state of her body, police believe she could have been dead for at least four days before she was found.
Although the family – the deceased’s two sons and brother – politely declined to comment, Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada confirmed the woman was buried on Monday morning.
“The report reached our offices at around 1415 hours on Sunday. The old lady was discovered by a friend of the children, who had gone round to give her food.”
According to the top cop, the friend knocked on the door several times and when she got no answer, she peered through a window and saw the lady lying motionless on her bed.
“She then noticed an unusual smell emanating from the house and immediately contacted the police,” continued Ngada, adding the officers who attended the scene then called for a doctor.
“It was just a formality as the woman had clearly been dead for a while.”
Indeed, Ngada explained the corpse was so badly decayed that the cops dared not move it. Instead, she was kept at home overnight, with the pathologist conducting the post-mortem at the house the following morning.
Although police are yet to establish the cause of death, Ngada stressed foul play was unlikely.
“At this juncture, we cannot rule out anything but the chances of foul play are slim looking at the way the house was intact. The post-mortem will clear the mist,” said the police boss, who urged family members to check on their elderly relatives as often as possible.
“We also encourage neighbors to always check on each other on a daily basis as it also helps in fighting crimes,” he concluded.
