Say the name Boldwin Bols and I guarantee you most of people in a room would burst into laughter!
The 32-year-old is well known for cracking hilarious jokes that leave you in tears.
He is also an MC who is famous for bringing life to every party!
In a rather humorous exchange, Baldwin Bols takes us on a tour of his life as a comedian and MC as well as his other interests.
For some of our readers who may not know who Boldwin Bols is, please introduce yourself.
My names are Tebogo Boldwin Ramokate, but everyone who knows me calls me calls me Boldwin Bals which is also my stage name.
I am a performer in the lines of stand-up comedy and directing events, also known as MC’ing.
Where is home for Boldwin Bals?
I am a North-Eastern boy, hailing from Makaleng Village.
If you want specifics, I am from Tholo Ward in Makaleng.
When and how did you get into comedy?
The story is a rather funny one actually.
So, I was first introduced to comedy in 2016 by my friends Moabi Dick, DJ Khebah and Stevie G.
It was all a joke, they paid me P200 to go on stage, and for sure I turned out to be a funny.
Since that day, I have been doing comedy.
Interesting bet! Alright, how were you introduced to MC’ing?
I was introduced to MC’ing by DJ Khenzo (Kenneth Tebele).
If I’m being honest, I was never really into it from the jump, however, I continued with it and I’ve grown to love it.
Can you recall your first performance in front of a live audience? What was it like?
I remember it like it was yesterday!
My first performance was in August 2016, it was a seven-minute-long performance which is quite lengthy for an open mic.
It was a fire set man!
It really felt good being up on stage.
Since then, what can you count as your most memorable performance?
GIMC Comedy 2022 was my most memorable performance yet.
GIMC Comedy is the biggest comedy platform in Botswana and I knew that I had to deliver my very best.
We love that for you! So, what was your worst performance?
I promise you, I am a very funny guy so believe me when I say there is never a dull moment when I am on stage.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To come see Boldwin Bals perform (laughs)
That was a good one! What is your best strategy for memorizing monologues?
Hmm…I can’t say there is a strategy, but whatever works for you do it.
For me, it takes two hours to prepare for a 15-minute set.
That’s how much of a hassle it is to come up with content that will surely make people laugh.
How do you come up with material and how do you practice?
I actually write my own jokes hey, just to put it out there!
I carry a pen and paper all the time incase something inspires me.
Also, I spend a lot of time with drunk people who always have something funny to say.
I’ll definitely be looking out for that pen and pad next time I bump into you! What would you say is the worst thing about your job?
I think the only problem, which is a huge concern for most comedians, is that people never take you seriously if you are a comedian.
Everything I say is a joke to them
Are you making enough money through comedy though?
There is nothing like enough money.
As a result, I have other things do on the side.
I am an Entertainment Manager at Notwane Lifestyle Club, a voice over artist, actor and scriptwriter.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
I recently bought a book for my partner
