Herdboy remanded for assaulting colleague

Christinah Motlhabane
REMANDED: Sibanda

A Zimbabwean man is fighting for his life at Nyangabgwe Hospital after he was hit with something suspected to be a metal rod on the head.

The incident is said to have happened on Friday night at Makomoto lands where the victim and accused worked as herd boys.

It is suspected that Motlhokomedi Sibanda, 17, assaulted Maxen Nyoni, 21, who had been sitting with others in front of the house.

Nyoni sustained serious injuries on the head and was taken to the clinic and was later referred to Nyangabgwe hospital where he is admitted.

Sibanda allegedly fled after committing the offence, but the police managed to arrest him the same night.

He was arraigned before a Francistown Magistrates Court last Tuesday where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

State Prosecutor, Kenneth Edward, told court that investigations in the matter were still fresh and that the victim is admitted at Nyangabgwe hospital.

“The victim is in critical condition and unable to speak, so we have not yet recorded his statement. We are making an application for the accused to be remanded in custody. We have not availed the Investigating officer, so we pray for another date to avail him to update court on the status of the matter,” Prosecutor Edward said.

The accused person was also charged with entering the country through an ungazetted point of entry.

He was therefore remanded in custody and will be back in court on the 22nd of November.
