MoESD and teacher unions reach agreement
Ministry of Education and Teachers unions have come to a 5 percent agreement for coursework and invigilation rates.
In a meeting held on 17th August, Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) and Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) agreed with the employer on the increment for this year.
In the concluding joint statement signed on Friday 1st September, the parties agreed that unions will submit a detailed proposal on the intensity of the coursework for further engagement with the Ministry.
The parties also agreed that coursework for Agriculture at Moeng College, and Tourism and Hospitality at Maun Senior have some peculiarities that need to be catered for, and have agreed in principle to continue engaging each other on the same for the 2023 coursework.
Lastly the parties further found common ground and agreed that no disciplinary and or punitive action will be taken against members of the two unions for actions that they took with respect to coursework before this agreement.
This ultimately brings to an end an impasse between unions and employer.
Teachers, at the advise of their unions had withdrawn their labour with regards to coursework.
The Ministry then took the matter to court, seeking a ruling that’d compel teachers to carry out course work and submit marks accordingly .
