Police in Molepolole are investigating a shooting incident involving a 23-year-old man suspected to mentally ill who gunned down his father last week Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 12 mid-day at an 84-year-old traditional doctor’s home where the family had gone for consultation.
The couple, an 80-year-old man, (deceased) and his wife aged 45; from Ncojane village allegedly took the suspect to the said traditional doctor for healing.
According to sources close to police investigation the traditional doctor had accommodated the family overnight.
“Gun in hand, the medicine man was about to leave the house to look for his cows when another patient arrived so he took the rifle back to the house and attended the new patient in the other house. However the mentally ill suspect who had been observing the traditional doctor went into the hut where the gun was, took it and shot his father,” revealed the source.
Shocked at the sound of a gunshot, both the medicine man and his other patient ran away leaving a frantic woman trying to examine her bleeding husband,” said an eyewitness.
Confirming the tragic incident, Kweneng Police Station Commander, Kerekang said after the incident, the shooter locked himself in the other patient’s car, which was parked outside.
He was dragged out kicking and screaming after the closed windows were broken.
His father had died on the spot before he could be taken to Scottish Livingstone Hospital.
“We are waiting for the suspect’s fitness report from a doctor before we can take him to court for arraignment,” said Kerekang.
