Fisherman drowns in a pond

The body of a 42-year-old man was fished out of a pond along the river at Shashe Brige village on Saturday night.

The Kalakamati village man is said to have drowned in the pond along Shashe River at around 1830 hours.

Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada, confirmed the incident to The Voice. “The deceased was reported to have been fishing with other two men when it happened. It was reported that as they were fishing he got inside the pond and never came back and the two men who were with him got worried and called for help,” Ngada said.

He also mentioned that the matter was then reported to Shashe Bridge Chief. “That was when the police were notified and the scuba divers were called to assist remove the man from the water. The body was retrieved from the pond at 2100hours and he was taken to the local clinic where he was certified dead,” Ngada said.

The police boss noted that it was the first drowning incident they recorded in their jurisdiction this year.

He urged people to desist from swimming or fishing in rivers or pools without any life jackets and water kills. “And unlicensed fishing on its own is illegal. It is an act punishable by law, so I advice people to desist from fishing without permission,” he said.
