Duo remanded for stealing BTC communication cables

REMANDED: Mmui and Mpapi

Two young men accused of stealing Botswana Telecommunication Corporation cables were this week remanded in custody by Molepolole Magistrate Kefilwe Resheng.

The accused persons Lemogang Kagiso Mpapi,28, from Phaphane ward in Mochudi, Kabelo Mmui aged 24 from Mogoditshane and another not before court on January 21st, 2021 at Masuaditshwene ward in Molepolole acting jointly stole a black communications cable valued at P220, 100.16 belonging to Botswana Telecommunication Corporation.

The accused are said to have sped off  in a Honda Fit vehicle loaded with the stolen cables, after they were found by BTC employees.

The BTC employees are said to have then given chase and the suspects abandoned their car and fled, disappearing into the thicket.

The BTC employees then informed the police who attended the scene and took the cables as exhibits.

The investigating officer, Detective Constable Onthatile Ramocha, told the court that the accused should not be granted bail as police had struggled to arrest them.

“We managed to arrest them on February 2nd, 2021, the first accused was arrested in Broadhurst, the second was arrested in Mogoditshane, Tsolamosese and we are still looking for the third suspect commonly known as Shamwari. They should be remanded till we arrest the third accused,” argued Ramocha.

The duo asked the investigating officer how he was going to arrest the third accused since he did not know him and every Zimbabwean native is referred to as Shamwari.

Ramocha explained that he had already liaised with Broadhurst police officers who have proved that they know the third accused.

Meanwhile Magistrate Resheng remanded the accused and gave the police 14 days to have completed their investigations.
