Young lover allegedly scams retired teacher out of P1.8 million in 10 months
Having called time on her teaching career last year, a 57-year-old mother thought retirement was off to the perfect start, believing she’d found love with a younger man.
Sadly, it seems Kaone Kennedy Tubego, 34, was only after her retirement package and had zero interest in her heart.
Currently in police custody following his arrest earlier this week, the suspected con-man allegedly connived with two fake prophet, tricking the trusting former teacher into handing over P1.8 million in just ten months.
It is said Tubego, who is originally from Kopong, zoned in on the complainant in November last year, proposing love, which the ex-educator readily agreed to.
Within a month of the relationship, it is alleged the young lothario was already putting his plan into action.
Close sources say he checked on his ‘sugar-mummy’ at her place in Molapo-wa-Bojang in early December, convincing her to accompany him on the 50km journey to Kanye to meet his prophet and pray for him.
“They met the man claiming to be a prophet inside a car parked in the streets somewhere around Kanye. During the meeting, the prophet claimed the victim’s son had some spiritual attacks that needed to be attended to urgently. The prophet then started demanding payment and the woman gave him P10, 000,” revealed the source.
Unsatisfied, the fraudster later demanded more; fearing for her son’s well-being, the unsuspecting victim duly agreed, forking out P90, 000 and a further P120, 000 to the ‘Man of God’ on 24 December 2024.
Still not content, Ben 10 reportedly introduced his girlfriend to a second evangelist, this time a woman.
The new prophet warned the victim and her son they were in grave danger; she promised she could save them with some routine healing rituals, but required payment to conduct a miracle prayer.
Over the next few months, she continued giving the scammers her pension money, under the impression it would be returned at the end of the prayers.
The police believe she also handed over a substantial amount of money to her boyfriend, which he was meant to pass on to the prophets; it is unclear whether he kept the cash or not.
Blissfully unaware she was being duped, it is thought the retired teacher continued the affair with her young lover right up until the end of August.
She only began to smell a rat earlier this month when the male prophet phoned her up, claiming he had a strong vision, which showed him she needed to sell her house urgently.
On Friday 12 September, she reported the matter to Lobatse Police Station.
In a brief interview, Lobatse Station Commander, Boitshepho Kaisara confirmed his officers are investigating a case of obtaining by false pretences.
“She said she met a certain man who they got in a relationship with and the man later introduced her to his prophet. The woman reported to have lost over P1, 893 620 from the beginning of December till this September. Our investigations are ongoing; we have so far arrested the suspected boyfriend to assist us with the investigations,” explained Superintendent Kaisara, adding they are yet to establish the identities of the two would-be prophets.
The top cop further told The Voice the traumatised victim has been devastated by the betrayal and is set to undergo counselling.
“Only then will we interview her for more details,” explained Kaisara.
The police chief cautioned the public to be vigilant about scammers, warning such cases normally increase towards the festive season.
“Our message is always there and we shall continue to spread the message. There is no one who can assist to increase the money miraculously, at least let us meet prophets in church and also be careful that we protect our money and properties from scammers,” concluded the Superintendent.
Unfortunately, his advice comes too late for the heartbroken, broke teacher.
