A fisherman from Shakawe drowned after his boat capsized in the Okavango River on Tuesday.

The body of the 36-year-old fisherman was recovered shortly after the incident by one of the villagers.

Speaking toThe Voice, Senior Superintendent Victor Nlebisi confirmed the incident. He said the victim was with his friend at the time of the incident. Nlebisi said the police received the report around 5pm and rushed to the scene.

“One of the villagers dived into the waters and retrieved him. He was rushed to Joseph Kavindama hospital where he was certified dead. According to his surviving friend they were using the net for fishing and the boat capsized. He tried to rescue him but failed because he is not a good swimmer. He then called people for help. This is the first incident to occur this year,” said Nlebesi

Nlebesi advised fishermen to be cautious when fishing because not only do they risk drowning but also attacks by the crocodiles and hippopotamus.
