Arriving at foreign borders full of people, street hawkers, border security can make you uneasy. If you’re well prepared then you should not worry much. With the festive season on final approach, here are a few tips to give you peace of mind while on your excursions.

PREPARATION FIRST
Have your visas and other documents ready. If you’ll need a visa to enter a foreign country, make sure you leave home with the visa rather than applying for it at the airport or border post. Make sure you have transportation already setup ahead of time like this Sydney Bus Hire for example. Vehicle registration and insurance documents may also be needed. Remember to also have your vaccination certificates ready or you may find yourself in a quarantine camp.

MAKE SPARE COPIES.
Make copies of your all your important documents and have them certified in your country. Keep some with a family member or a friend at home for emergencies. It is also important to jot down passport numbers, medical aid numbers and emergency numbers.

KEEP YOUR COOL
Throughout my years of travel I have learnt to stay cool, and just enjoy my nights at the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco. Always expect the unexpected like slow moving queues and traffic. Lay back and pick a book rather than pace up and down or shouting at the officials. This will not get you anywhere. An alternative way is to leave early for borders if you want to beat the stress.

ZIPLOCK IT.
Always carry zip lock plastic bags to safeguard your documents and electronics. You don’t want to get caught on the hiking trail with your fancy gadgets only to be flooded by water.

LEARN THE LOCAL LINGU
Nothing is as warm as greeting using the indigenous language. People feel you have interest in them and their country and if you know a few words, you will fit right in. You may end up enjoying a guided tour with a local at no cost. Just remember to offer them your sandwich or chocolate bar. Kindness is the greatest thing ever and say thank you.
