The countdown has begun and we hope you are ready for what’s coming your way. The Annual Sixties Party (Mmabatho North West) takes place annually in the first weekend of December and it has been running for the past 16 years since 1998.
As it continues to grow in stature with the addition of every annual chapter, Maftown will definitely be alive with sound and buzzing with people from all corners of Africa on the 6th of December 2014 as it will be the 17th Annual Maftown 60s Anniversary that guarantees an unimaginable blend of people and music attracting young part goes from all walks of life and all over the country (including some parts of the Southern African sub-continent- Botswana & Lesotho).
Brought to you by Nare Events & Marketing, all this is made possible through viral marketing as a result of the wide network of connections the people who attend have in the popular culture social scene. The event plays host to a unique melting pot of urban cultures with young people from a wide range of towns and cities like Mafikeng, Gaborone, Maseru, Johannesburg and everywhere else coming together for a massive celebration that goes on until the sun comes out, and if you have the stamina into the early afternoon.
The location, Monare Farm (which is a private farm), is a 10-minute drive away from the hustle and city life of Mafikeng Town, the North West Province Capital and this offers people from the major urban land an escape into a world surrounded by nature and hardly tainted by the vulgarity of urban development, where time seems to stand still. This forms the perfect setting for one to completely let go of their inhibitions.
In addition, the fact that it’s a costume party adds to its escapism appeal. You can be anything you want to be and let your alter ego out. This is particularly important for young people who are constantly searching for the freedom to experiment and have fun with their identity, far away from the yolk of the weighty demands of the institutions of authority back in the real world.
Like the name suggests, it started off as a costume party where patrons came dressed in sixties attire. Previous years have seen extraordinary fashion statements being made from retro, to ghetto, to old school and funky.
2014 is the year the event goes back to Retro and partygoers are encouraged to go out and raid their grandparents wardrobe for that 60s outfit; not forgetting the afros and shades. Over time it has evolved to include any costume imaginable, anything from the Pope to Spiderman. You can be anything you want to be and let your alter ego loose.
To get the masses warmed up, Friday 5 December will be the high-energy Pre Sixties Party at Red Ox, featuring some of the top club DJs in the country. Saturday, 6 December will be the main Sixties Costume Party at Monare Farm with a great line-up of DJ’s and a performance by The Brooklyn Based Trio, Tortured Soul.
