Fans reflect of the sorry state of football in Francistown
Ecco City Green’s failure to make it into the be Mobile Premiership after losing the promotional play offs to Rolling Boys means Francistown will endure another season without a team in the top flight.
Dubani-wa-Dubani spoke to football lovers in the city to find out what they think about this situation.
“Having no Francistown team in the Premiership is painful for us supporters. Team officials should think seriously about merging several clubs to make one strong side. I suggest that TASC, ECCO and Tafic who have experience playing in the premier league should merge. What they call the new team does not matter. Such a club would get all the best talent in town and make it easier to negotiate with sponsors.”
“This is a very sad situation which needs to be addressed immediately. We are a city and should have a team in the Premiership. I think Tafic and ECCO failed in their promotion bids because of lack of money. I call on companies and individuals who have money to invest in these clubs. I do not support the idea of merging clubs. Each club has its own history and culture which are important to its followers. A city cannot have one club. We need several competitive clubs. The talent is there; all that is needed is money.”
“I, like many other supporters, am disappointed at our city not having a club in the Premiership. Team administrators must up their game and work hard to rectify the situation. They must work hard to get sponsorship and investment into the clubs. They must also develop young talent for the future. Some say we need to dissolve clubs and form one Ghetto club but I do not subscribe to that idea. We are a city and the many clubs are a sign of the diversity and the different club cultures in our city. The one club idea cannot work. We are not a mining town.”
“We need to have a club in the Premiership and the best way is to merge clubs. With proper planning we could have two strong clubs in the league soon. Tafic and ECCO should become one club because their roots are in the community while GNT and TASC should come together because of their disciplined forces background. Merging will give clubs more leverage when seeking sponsorship and investment. They would also catch the best talent and give us the quality football needed to win trophies and entertain the fans.”
“It’s worrisome to have no representation from Francistown in the Premiership. Companies that do business in Ghetto must come on board and put some money in the clubs. Only clubs with money can succeed. Orapa United and Township Roller are the perfect examples. Club administrators must also work hard to bring people with money into their clubs. I do not buy into the idea of merging clubs as each has its own culture – as a Tafic supporter I do not see myself cheering for any other clubs. Many of my Friends at ECCO and other clubs tell me they do not see themselves doing that either.
