TEETHING CHALLENGES HAMPER HOUSING PROJECT

Completion of the Botswana Housing Corporation’s 545 housing units in Mophane Estates, Francistown is running behind time due to teething logistical challenges and unfavourable weather conditions which the project had to endure.
This was revealed by the corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Reginald Motswaiso who also said they now expect the housing units to be complete by July. The initial completion time was November last year.
He said the other main reason for the delay was because some of the units had to be demolished because of shoddy workmanship.
Addressing a luncheon to officially launch and showcase the Mophane Estates (formerly known as Gerald Estates) to potential takers last week Motswaiso said some of  the these challenges included shortage of cement and stock brick due to supplier’s inadequate capacity.
Shortage of experienced bricklayers also compounded the problems.
“The other problem is that an impenetrable underlying rock was found on site, which we had to engage the Department of Mines, Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MEWR) to investigate. The area was also found to have black cotton soil in abundance, which resulted in the importation of a different type of soil suitable for construction,’’ he said.
Motswaiso said the unfavourable weather conditions also played a part in delaying the project as it had to go through two rainy seasons which meant work stoppage during the rainy days.
“The contractors are however implementing some finishing touches on the project and we hope by end of July the housing units would be ready for occupation.”
The Mophane Estate housing development project which was commissioned in December 2008 forms part of set goals towards achieving BHC’s mandate of providing accommodation to the nation based on NDP 10 target of building 29 000 units by 2016.
