An unemployed 27-year-old man from Kachikau village, whose names are still withheld, allegedly committed suicide at Kachikau Police Post last Thursday afternoon.
The deceased had been arrested as a suspect in a litany of cases which ranged from malicious damage to property, use of insulting language, assault and threat to kill.
Superintendent Thomas Samasasa of Kachikau Police Post confirmed the shocking incident and described it as the first of its kind at his station.
The deceased allegedly cut a blanket he had found in the police holding cells into pieces and used it to hang himself from the rafters of the room, he said.
His (the deceased) lifeless body was found hanging from the rafters of the cell by one of the police officer.
Samasasa said the police officer who discovered the deceased’s body was doing hourly routine checks of the cell.
“Yes, it is true that the police are investigating a case in which a 27-year-old man committed suicide in our holding cells,” confirmed Samasasa.
However, he refused to reveal the names of the deceased and the ward in which the deceased hails from arguing that his (the deceased’s) relatives are yet to be fully notified about this unfortunate incident.
“He was in detention on allegations of malicious damage to property,” he said and revealed that the deceased was their regular customer.
Some three weeks ago, a mentally retarded prisoner serving time at Ghanzi Prison was found hanging from a tree within the prison premises.
