President of Botswana Congress Party, Dumelang Saleshando has confirmed talks to have him as the Umbrella for Democratic Change’s representative at Maun West Constituency.
Saleshando who was speaking at the party’s press briefing on Wednesday said that there has been a direct request from Maun West that he avails himself as a candidate.
“There are on-going negotiations between our parties. It was brought by Maun West people and as BCP we passed it through executive structures, central committee and now it is being discussed at UDC level.”
Maun West Constituency was initially allocated to Botswana Movement for Democracy.
BMD won the constituency through Batawana Kgosikgolo Tawana Moremi who later resigned from the party.
However, the BMD was given the constituency under incumbency system before the formation of Alliance for Progressives.
After the formation of AP, there were suspicions that the BMD may have lost majority of the members to the break away party.
This resulted in BCP getting into negotiations to get the Maun West constituency since it is the party’s stronghold area.
BMD President, Sidney Pilane, then went on record saying allocations of constituencies within the UDC was long done and his party was going to stand in all the 14 constituencies that they were allocated.
Meanwhile, Saleshando said that members of the UDC will have to decide on how constituencies should be allocated at the Umbrella’s congress next week.
He said that another thing that will have to be reviewed is the constitution.
