Tension mounts as teams seek basement escape
The final games for the three relegation candidates will be played at the same time with Killer Giants, Jwaneng Comets and Boteti Young Fighters scrambling for a foothold to a promotional play-offs place.
According to the Premier League Manager, Phuthego Setete all the games will be played on Sunday at 1500 hours as they will determine who goes to the play-offs and who bites the dust.
“While some people are arguing about the Extension Gunners versus Township Rollers game it does not carry the same weight like the bottom three. The relegation issue will be determined by the involved parties hence we want them played simultaneously. All the three teams have an equal opportunity to either relegate or book a last minute place in the play-offs. Even BMC is technically in, even though there is a huge goal difference to be changed,” Setete told Voice Sport when quizzed on why they have fixtured the teams at the same time.
Setete denied any suggestion that the fixtures may have been deliberately drawn to avoid any match fixing possibility. He explained that they were looking at giving all the teams an equal opportunity.
On the issue of whether they will have certain referees at the crucial games he explained that they will not adopt that because it will set a wrong precedence. “We can’t take any special people to any of the games. This week the referees were in an elite course and all of them save for one who was injured, reportedly passed and that is a good sign. So we’re not worried about their capabilities to handle the games. Actually even last weekend we had the same crucial games and we havent received any complaints. We believe with the ongoing course they will all rise to the standard and perform come match day,” Phuthego said.
When asked whether there are any outstanding protests from this season as the league goes to bed, the Premier League Manager explained that they do not have any pending issues. “We only have a few cases that will be resolved over the weekend and hopefully they won’t be dragging for too long from the submission made,” he explained.
While the last games can change the complexion of the league the top goal scorer award is certainly going to Township Rollers top marksman, Terrence Mandaza, who is also reportedly on the wanted list of many teams outside the country. The Zimbabwean has scored 31 goals from the 28 games he has played for Rollers.
