GOING FOR GOLD: Athletes in a previous meet

The Annual Mascom Phikwe marathon will be held on the 5th of May 2012.  The dates have been pushed to an earlier date due to the 2012 London Olympics.  Mascom Phikwe is International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) recognized race.
According to the chairperson of the Local Organising Committee Oganeditse Gaokgethelwe, Mascom is “sponsoring the marathon at the tune of over P300 000”. Last year there was a complaint from athletes that the routes were not well marked and Gaokgethelwe said that they are going to deploy marshals to guide the athletes.

He further said registration for the marathon has already began in all Cresta hotels, and said they expect a good turn-out of international athletes. The LOC chief said that a plan is underway to register the marathon with the Registrar of Companies as it has never been registered in its 27 years.
The prizes for the categories are as follows, 42.2 km P25 000, runners up P15 000 and third prize P7 500, 15 km is P5000, P2500 and P1000. There is also the 42.2 km for veterans and the winner will pocket P5000, runner up P2500 while the third will be P1000. The marathon will also be used as a qualifying race for the 2012 London Olympics.
