As they say, trends come and go! Every season, a girl finds something that catches her interest and keeps her eye-balls rolling.
Like most girls, I want a lot of things and I want it all. But on my hottest radar the Ankara fabrics and boots take the lead. And yes, I must give credit to Nigeria and my visits here, where the Ankara and other African traditional fabrics are the order of the day, as local designers creatively turn them into amazing pieces that fit to the nines. The patriotic African girl in me, couldn’t help but smile with pride upon seeing Gwen Stefani’s incorporation of these fabrics on her clothing brand L.A.M.B’s 2011 Spring Collection at the New York Fashion Week. Pity we sometimes need international recognition to put a stamp of approval on the priceless jewels that our beautiful continent offers. Though as Botswana we may not have our own traditional fabric, other than claiming the German print, it’s quite refreshing to also see that a few of our local designers are keeping to the vast African traditional fabrics in their designs.
And of course, a girl cannot do anything without shoes!! And this season flat boots, high-heeled boots, thigh-high boots, cow-boy boots-revamped, you name it, are finding space in fashionistas’ closets the world over!!! I took a little glimpse at one of the world’s best shoe designers Jimmy Choo’s 2011 pre-fall collection and went dizzy with shoe-lust!
As I find my way around Lagos, my home for the next four weeks, I’ll make it a point to share the Lagosian fashion trends with you.
