Magistrate Matlhodi Paya of Village Magistrates Court this morning denied murder accused, Tumisang Mompati, bail pending police investigations.
Court heard that on Saturday, at Gaborone West Phase I, the 36-year-old Mompati murdered Otto Noge by stabbing him in the chest with a knife.
It is alleged that Mompati was given a cellphone by Noge sometimes last year to repair it.
The accused had allegedly been playing hide and seek until Noge found him at his house on Saturday.
It is alleged that the two had a misunderstanding after Mompati failed to give Noge his phone.
When opposing the bail application, the Investigating Officer- Detective Sergeant Molatudi Ditlhobolo from Gaborone West Police Station told court that the matter was still fresh as they only started working on the case yesterday (Sunday).
He said he needed more time to record statements from possible state witnesses.
“There is tension and tempers are high, so we fear for his life in the event he is released. He is safe in our custody. Relatives of the deceased and the public wanted to take the law into their hands. They forcefully tried to take him from us when we were at the scene. The other thing is he might interfere with our investigations as we haven’t recorded any witness statements,” said Ditlhobolo.
Magistrate Paya considered Ditlhobolo’s submissions and decided to give the police more time to complete their investigations.
She further ordered that the accused be remanded in custody and that he should be brought for mention on February 5th.
