North West District choose its finest
Maun Police and Gumare Primary Hospital were the big winners at the inaugural North West District Mr and Mrs Public Service Awards which took place on Saturday night at The Village Church.
The main prize of the night went to Maun Police traffic officer Sergeant, Onneile Mokane who was crowned Mr Public Service.
Second place went to Central Transport Organisation Technician, Solly Kachana, whilst Onkabetse Masilo, a nurse at Gumare Primary Hospital, came third.
In the women’s category, Oratile Ratau, a teacher at Sedie Junior School, was the delighted recipient of the Mrs Public Service award.
Second place went to another Maun Police Officer, Kabelo Lesiela, whilst Gumare Primary Hospital’s Miccarah Disang followed in her colleague’s footsteps by coming third.
The lively event, which had a glamorous, showbiz feel to it, attracted a number of excited spectators as well as nervous competitors.
Employees from different government departments took part in the ceremony, all desperate to claim the prestigious titles that Mokane and Ratau eventually won.
According to Maun Administration Authority sub-council chairperson, Gaokgalala Letswee, the idea behind the ceremony is to unite the public workers as well as to motivate them.
“This pageant paves a way to the annual commemorated Public Service Day as well as to Botswana’s 50 years Independence Anniversary. Since the pageant started, North West district has not been participating in the event therefore this year we decided that we won’t be left out again,” he explained.
“We hope that the winners of today’s pageant will represent the district very well in the upcoming national finals which will also be held in Maun,” he added hopefully, before describing the night as a resounding success.
