A merciless man escaped a jail term after he was found guilty of breaking his 10-year-old nephew’s teeth in a fit of anger.
Boniface Maikati, 27, of Sekao ward in Nata Village learnt it the hard way after hitting his nephew with a fist, breaking his two teeth in the process.
Maikati is said to have hit the young boy for slapping his son who had insulted the 10-year-old. He was given a wholly suspended sentence.
The Francistown Magistrate Court, where he appeared for sentencing on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, heard that the incident happened in September 2012.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Sentencing him, Francistown Chief Magistrate Peggy Madandume took into consideration that Makaita was a first offender.
She also said the man pleaded guilty to the charge thereby not wasting the court’s time.
The magistrate however noted that assault occasioning actual bodily harm is a serious offense especially that the boy lost two teeth in the process.
Makaita escaped incarceration when the magistrate sentenced him to six months in jail wholly suspended for five years.
Sub-Inspector Thulaganyo Pitso of Botswana Police prosecuted the case.
